The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) is a scholarship that aim to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific, while addressing priority development issues of the region.

The ALA program comprises ALA Scholarships and ALA Fellowships. These awards are for leaders or those who have potential for leadership roles that can influence social and economic reform, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region.

ALA Scholarships are for study at Masters or Doctorate level in an Australian university. Study programs must relate to a priority development area: disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development, water and sanitation. ALA scholars also undertake a Leadership Development Program in Australia.

As ALA Scholarships are an investment in the future of the Asia-Pacific region, ALA scholars are required to return to their home country or the region for two years after they have completed their studies in Australia.

Selection for ALA Scholarships is competitive, based on leadership qualities, academic excellence and potential impact on return home.

To be eligible to apply this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria.

A school??? Its difficult to choose???

Choosing a school involves very many factors but, to begin, here are three easily definable ones:

1. Find a program that interests you.

Check the Web sites of many schools. You will see a variety of programs and then you can compare and choose based on the schools closest to you. If you see yourself as a businessperson, choose a Business Administration program. Or you can choose a very familiar undergraduate Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree path, which will allow you to diverge into very many careers.
If you are less certain, you can also attend a community college where you can choose a University Transfer program, which allows transfer to the university of your choice. Community colleges also tend to have innovative programs, slightly out of the traditional academic. For example, at Capilano College, there is a two-year diploma in Tourism Management, which can become a Bachelor degree with two more years of study.
If music is your interest, there is a Bachelor of Jazz Studies or a Bachelor of Music Therapy degree. Community colleges also carry a wide range of interesting programs like commercial animation, graphic design, theatre, studio art, landscape horticulture, film production, and on and on. Most departments provide information evenings and this is a good chance to see if the program is for you or not.

2. Look for quality teaching.

This is not as difficult as it sounds, and after all, this is why you are thinking of further education. Check the Web sites of schools and look for features of the school, which highlight the work they do to maintain a high quality of teaching and teachers. Choose a school where teachers and programs win awards. There is usually a reason and that is important to you.
If it is important to the school to provide excellent educational opportunities, then they will advertise it. Perhaps the best way to check this out is to speak to previous students and hear their stories. There are also e-mail forums, chat groups, and even the student union. Quality teachers will have an impact on students for the rest of their lives, so why not get the best.

3. Think about your future.

Choose a school that is thinking about the future of its graduates. Ask the school for data about graduates, how successful they have been, where they went, and what they did. Most schools provide this information on their Web sites.
This will give you some ideas about how successfully students transferred or how quickly they got hired or at least about job possibilities upon graduation. And even if you think that it is too soon to think about it, because you have four long years to go, remember that your education now involves absorbing as much information as possible. But obviously a great program plus great teaching will lead you to a great career!
